Mobile app

This project was part of Kasvuhuoneilmiö, an intensive five-week co-evolution innovation program that connects real-world challenges with multidisciplinary teams. In collaboration with WellO2, a Finnish company specializing in breathing training, the goal of the project was to offer a sustainable solution to the partner’s challenge.

Challenge – What Would Make People Want to Use a Breathing Trainer Every Single Day?

Investigate whether adding a sensory element, such as menthol tablets, can help people using the WellO2 Steam Breathing Trainer build and maintain a routine, or whether it could do more harm than good in terms of safety, trust, or regulatory integrity.

Team's Approach
  • Evaluate the current solution (menthol tablets).

  • Conduct interviews to understand what prevents habit formation.

  • Identify and explore potential solutions.

  • Create a user journey.

  • Evaluate and select the best solution based on Desirability, Usability, Feasibility, Viability, and Ethicality, a concept introduced by the Kasvuhuoneilmiö team.

  • Develop a Minimum Viable Concept (MVC) or a pre/prototype.

  • Present the solution to the challenge partner.

My Contribution

I contributed across research, concept development, and design. Specifically, I:

  • Participated in user interviews.

  • Synthesized research findings into clear insights.

  • Collaborated with the team to explore and shape solution directions.

  • Created the user journey and user stories.

  • Developed low-fidelity prototypes with pen and paper.

  • Introduced the concept of personalization as one of the key features.

  • Designed the final UI of the application.

  • Participated in the presentation to the challenge partner.

Ideation

The interviews showed that in order to create and maintain healthy habits, the experience needs to be effortless, fit into daily routines with minimal disruption, and provide immediate results. Based on these insights, the team explored three directions:

  • Make the breathing trainer less bulky and easier to carry, especially for travel.

  • Update the existing app to be more engaging and better support the daily habit.

  • Improve the menthol tablets and explore additional sensory elements.

Final Solution

Based on the Desirability, Usability, Feasibility, Viability, and Ethicality concept, the upvoted solution was to update the existing WellO2 app. The reason for this decision was based on information given by the WellO2 company, the team's ideas, and evidence from the initial research. The new app would offer:

  • Onboarding

  • Breathing score based on a personalized plan to keep track of the progress

  • Health integration with Apple Health, Google Fit, Samsung Health etc.

  • Coaching and personalized breathing exercises, insights, and tips

  • Online store

  • Audio feedback during breathing sessions

  • Two-tier subscription to unlock the full power of WellO2

Potential Impact

The proposed solution aims to support habit formation by making the experience more engaging, personalized, and easier to integrate into daily life. By combining guidance, feedback, and progress tracking, the app could help users build and maintain a consistent breathing routine.
